In Memoriam

CHARLES D. WINDERS, CPA

It is with great sadness that we share with you the news of the passing of Charles D. Winders, CPA, who passed away on January 30, 2015 at age 72.

Charlie was born on November 11, 1942 in Cave-In-Rock, IL (which he fondly referred to as God’s country). He was a product of a one-room school house and served for four years in the U.S. Air Force, primarily in Minot, North Dakota. After his military service, he attended Eastern Illinois University and graduated with honors with a degree in accounting and economics.

While at Eastern, he met his wife, Shelia Stortzum; they married November 1967. They moved to Mattoon in 1968 and in June of that year Charles joined the firm of Murphey, Jenne & Jones. He received his CPA certificate in November 1968 and was named a partner at the firm in May 1977. In January 1987, Charles and Derald Doehring established their own firm, now known as Doehring, Winders & Co. LLP. For nearly half a century in the community, Charles worked tirelessly, diligently and honestly in support of his clients, many of whom he considered members of his extended family.

Charles is survived by his wife of 47 years, Shelia; son, Jason Winders and wife, Amy of London, Ontario; daughter, Amanda Pazzo, and husband, Michael of Cincinnati, Ohio; five grandchildren, August Pazzo, Simon Pazzo, Athena Winders, Peter Winders and Alexander Winders; brother, John, and wife, Barb of Paducah, KY; sister, Shirley Minnie of Bethalto. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Treva Winders and sister, Ethel Winders.

Those who had the pleasure of knowing Charlie know that he was a true gentleman, a man of his word, and always looking out for others.  His presence at Doehring, Winders & Co. LLP will be greatly missed.
